How Do We Teach Literacy at Wedgwood?

Wedgwood uses the Teachers College's Reading and Writing Project Framework as our core reading curriculum. This in-class workshop model is supplemented with best practices for foundational reading skills (including phonics, fluency, and word work).

Seattle Public Schools began a partnership with Teachers College, Columbia University five years ago.  Teachers College (TC) had developed a framework for teaching reading and writing (using a workshop model) that was piloted in a few New York City Public Schools with much success and expanded over time.  The Reading and Writing Project began in earnest about 30 years ago with the focus almost exclusively on writing and for the last 20 years equally on both reading and writing.

As TC’s research grew and their involvement in New York Public Schools expanded, test scores among all student populations rose.  Over the last 10 years or so, school districts throughout the country began adopting their framework for literacy.  Seattle is now an “Affiliate District” which means we receive support directly from TC in the form of teacher training.

How Do We Teach Math?

Wedgwood is transitioning to using the District adopted Math curriculum, Math in Focus. For 2014-15, we are balancing the implementation of this curriculum with maintaining best practice to ensure all our students are learning at high levels and finding success. We will use assessments developed to determine students' skill levels and to guide teaching. Teachers evaluate student assessment data together to plan lessons to reach every child. Our instructional assistants and tutors focus on specific groups of students that need extra support.

Advanced Learning
  Wedgwood offers all students the opportunity to engage in a rigorous curriculum with highly qualified teachers trained in differentiation strategies to accommodate all learners. For students who qualify, Wedgwood supports one of the two Spectrum Programs in the Northeast Region of Seattle Public Schools. Spectrum accelerates curriculum in math (students in our Spectrum Walk-to-Math class work one year ahead) and reading. All Spectrum students are cluster grouped (integrated) into grade level classes (accept during the Spectrum Walk-to-Math class).

On‐going Evaluation of Student Data

Wedgwood will continue to evaluate data to determine next steps for teaching and learning.  We will use the following assessments to generate feedback about student growth:
  1. Smarter Balance Assessment (SBCC): The Smarter Balance Assessment is a standardized State assessment replacing the Measurements of Students Progress (MSP) for grade 3-5 starting in the 2014-15 school year. Smarter Balance will assess reading, writing, and math. In addition to the Smarter Balance assessments, 5th grade students will continue to take the Science MSP.
  2. Measures of Academic Progress (MAP): We use MAP in the fall and winter to guide teaching and identify students who may need additional support as well as those who need to be accelerated. 
  3. Teachers College Reading Assessment (TC): The TC reading assessment is administered by classroom teachers to individual students in the fall and spring. Select students are also assessed in the winter to monitor progress.
  4. Direct Reading Assessment (DRA): The DRA reading assessment is administered to 2nd grade students in the fall and spring by classroom teachers. Select students are also assessed in the winter to monitor progress.
  5. Common Formative Assessment: Grade levels use a variety of common formative assessments to monitor student progress throughout a lesson, unit, and year. These can include Curriculum Based assessments, Classroom Based assessment, Exit Tickets, etc.
With constant teacher input about student academic, social and emotional growth as well as a school‐wide focus on the above criteria, Wedgwood aims to meet the needs of every learner we serve.
